Evaporative coolers

Cool air by evaporating water; effectiveness depends strongly on outdoor humidity. This collection explains the main equipment formats, selection criteria, installation questions and upkeep for this system.

How evaporative coolers work

Water evaporates into incoming air, lowering dry-bulb temperature while adding moisture.

Performance in a real building depends on the equipment, the distribution path and the installation. Compare a specific product's published specifications with the needs of the room or building before treating a retail listing as a complete solution.

Types and configurations

Direct, indirect and two-stage systems; portable, window and whole-building formats.

Different configurations can share a category name while having very different electrical, duct, piping and control requirements. Confirm the exact model and components included in any quote.

Where they are used

Dry climates with appropriate ventilation. A professional assessment should establish the required capacity and identify any site constraints, especially for permanently installed equipment.

What to compare

Outdoor humidity, air exchange, water availability and maintenance are more decisive than a nominal room-area claim.

Climate, water use, airflow, and maintenance. Review warranty conditions and installation requirements along with the headline rating.

Technical details that matter

Direct evaporative cooling lowers dry-bulb temperature as water evaporates into incoming air, so the supply air becomes more humid. Its useful temperature drop falls as outdoor humidity rises. A path for air to leave the building is essential. Indirect systems separate the supply and wet airstreams.

Example application

A unit that performs well in a hot, dry afternoon may have limited cooling during a humid spell. Compare local wet-bulb conditions, air-change needs, water quality and pad maintenance before purchase.

Installation and ownership

Allow for equipment, compatible components, labor, controls, site work and any local requirements in the total cost. Published retailer prices represent the stated equipment only unless the listing explicitly includes more.

Clean pads and reservoirs, manage mineral scale and follow seasonal draining procedures.

Before placing an order: ask for exact model numbers, capacity calculations where appropriate, electrical and mechanical scope, commissioning steps and separate equipment and labor warranties.
